What is Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in the ground. It contains fibres that have excellent durability, fire resistance and insulating properties.

There are two main types of Asbestos:

LDB/FRIABLE A CLASS:

Friable asbestos is material containing asbestos that when dry, is in a powder form or may be crushed or pulverised into a powder form by hand pressure. This material poses a higher risk of exposing people to the air born asbestos fibres.

It is legislative requirement that all friable asbestos be conducted under the supervision of an Independent Hygienist who will issue a Clearance certificate when the removal has been completed and no threat of contamination has been found.

When asbestos fibres are bound into the matrix of another material such as asbestos cement products or resin binder, it is known as bonded asbestos. It cannot be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure.

Asbestos as a product was not completely banned from used In Australia until 31st December 2003. Asbestos in domestic building products has not been used since the late 1980’s, but if you house was build or renovated before 1990 it is thought that it will likely contain asbestos in some form.

01.

Roof or Fence

Do you have a corrugated asbestos roof that is deteriorating or damaged in any way? We can remove, decontaminate your ceiling space and can arrange replacement of your roof.

If your fence is of the corrugated cement variety (super six) it is probably asbestos. At Ausnorth Asbestos we can dig out your fence and remove from your property.

02.

Walls or Flooring

Asbestos in your home can be found in your walls, ceilings and flooring. It can also be found in the external cladding of your house.

If your house was build or renovated prior to 1990 it may or could contain asbestos sheeting.

The backing of your vinyl floor situated anywhere in your home, be it your kitchen, lounge, bedrooms or bathroom could also contain asbestos. Floor tiles and linoleum or lino, laid prior to the mid eighties will most likely contain asbestos, also the fibrous paper backing, or the mastic or bituminous layer of sarking type backing material. This is extremely dangerous when ripped up, with asbestos fibres being released, endangering everyone in the vicinity, and potentially contaminating the contents of the house, carpets, furniture etc.

The removal of these products is done in a safe and controlled manner, with the area being completely decontaminated at the completion of the removal work.

All asbestos waste will be removed from your property and transported away by an EPA registered vehicle. This will then be disposed of at an EPA registered landfill.

03.

Sampling

It is not always easy to tell if the product used contains asbestos, but we can arrange for a sample to be taken and analysed. These samples are analysed by a NATA Accredited Laboratory which is independent of our Company. This will issue us with a report on the results of the sample analysis. This report will then be passed onto you.
